Italy’s Si Cobas trade union has called a 24-hour nationwide rail strike on Friday to demand “an end to the genocide in Gaza,” the union said in a statement. The action will end at 9 p.m. on Friday.
The strike will particularly affect Intercity trains, the Italian railroads said, and may cause timetable changes before and after the 24 hours. Italian media reported that not all services will be suspended: regional trains will be guaranteed to run between 6 a.m. and 9 a.m. and between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m.
Italian media reported similar political actions have taken place in Italy in recent weeks. Genoa port staff laid off work several times last month in protest against events in Gaza.
Travelers in Italy may also face other strikes throughout October, although those actions are not organized as pro-Palestinian protests, Italian media reported. On Oct. 10 there will be a 24-hour strike in Rome by bus, subway and streetcar staff of the city transport organization Atac. On Oct. 13 employees of Aeroporti di Roma will lay off work between noon and 4 p.m. at the capital’s airports. On Oct. 29 airport workers at Milan, Florence and Pisa will stage a 24-hour strike.
