Travelers typically unlock an OV bike by holding their OV-chipkaart against the lock. However, on Monday morning, this system was inoperable at all locations. It was still possible to return OV bikes.
Fortunately, the “weather is currently terrible for cycling,” said a spokesperson for NS. “This hopefully means that not too many people are looking to rent a bike.”
This incident marks the third malfunction with OV bikes in a month and a half. On October 7 and two weeks prior, it was also impossible to rent OV bikes for several hours.
Across the country, more than twenty thousand OV bikes are available for rent, with plans to expand this number. By the end of the year, the total is expected to reach 25,000.
