NS Transitions to Dark Mode: Enhanced Readability and Improved Energy Efficiency

The new design replaces the traditional layout featuring a light background with dark blue text.

According to a spokesperson for NS, the design has been specifically developed to make information on the boards more accessible for travelers, including those with visual impairments or color blindness. “The dark mode is easier on the eyes and more visible from a greater distance,” the spokesperson told NU.nl.

Additionally, this adjustment leads to significant energy savings. This year alone, a 5 percent reduction in energy consumption is expected due to the lower brightness of the screens. Once the new boards are installed by ProRail next year, this could increase to as much as 30 percent. In total, there will be 3,600 boards, some of which consist of multiple screens.
