KLM has initiated summary proceedings against unions FNV and CNV in response to ongoing strikes by ground staff. The strikes, which have occurred three times in recent weeks, involve employees responsible for loading and unloading baggage, towing planes, and assisting passengers.
The actions follow a failure to reach a new collective bargaining agreement between KLM and the unions, unlike three other unions that have successfully negotiated terms. The upcoming fourth strike, scheduled for next Wednesday, is expected to last eight hours, according to the unions. KLM aims to prevent this extended disruption by seeking a court ruling.
Union Response
CNV negotiator Souleiman Amallah expressed surprise at KLM’s legal action, stating that the ground staff has conducted their strikes safely. He described the lawsuit as “unnecessary” and an obstruction of the right to strike. The unions had also planned to organize strikes for KLM ground staff during the summer vacation period, but those work stoppages were prohibited due to anticipated large crowds at Schiphol Airport.
