MPs unsure as to why the Netherlands eased restrictions faster than other countries

The North Sea has the Netherlands as the only country who still has the color red, however the ease of restrictions has already happened, and much faster than its neighboring countries like Germany who has the color green.

Tweede Kamer’s members expressed their concerns for the restrictions of lockdown happening too fast, and that this will lead to even more Covid-19 cases. According to Het Parool, Attje Kulken, PvdA MP stated: “I don’t understand why everything has to be loosened all at once”

On 18th of June, the Cabinet announced that the majority of the Covid-19 ease of restrictions will be canceled. The Netherlands’ Prime Minster, Mark Rutte said: “Everything that is possible at 1.5 meters is allowed again.”

Rutte was sure that the Netherlands has not eased the restrictions too early, by saying that ”No, it is not early”, during a press conference on Friday.

Kulken further stated how the Germany still kept some measures that are soon to be abandoned in the Netherlands, like the obligation of face masks in public spaces and shops. “Wouldn’t it be wiser to keep these for a while”, Kuiken said. The number of the virus cases in France and Belgium remain lower than in the Netherlands, however, the restrictions are strict still. “We are the worst student in the classroom. Vaccination may be going well now, but still only 25 percent of the population has had their second shot”, Kuiken added.

Jan Paternotte from the D66 party of MP stated that he is happy for the ease of restrictions. “If the OMT said that lockdown measures are o longer necessary, you should lift them.”

On the other hand, a MP from the SP, Peter Kwint, made it clear that what happened in 2020 shouldn’t be forgotten. Dutch travelers have brought the virus in the Netherlands, so Kwint warned that: “If you’re not careful, you’ll stumble into the finish line.”
