The largest stone of gem is said to be found in the Debswana firm, with a 1,098 carat diamond in Botswana.
According to the diamond company in Bostwana, Debswana claimed this 1,098-carat stone to be the third-biggest diamond in the world.
The diamond was found on June 1st, but it was shown to President Mokgweetsi Masisi on June 16th, in Gaborone.
“It is believed to be the third-largest gem-quality find in the world,” said the managing Director in Debswana Lynette Armstrong.
The “rare and extraordinary stone … means so much in the context of diamonds and Botswana,” she said. “It brings hope to the nation that is struggling.”
The stone has yet to be named, however, it measures 73mm long, 27mm thick, and 52mm wide. It is considered to be one of the largest stone to be found in Debswana, which is a shared venture between the international diamond giant De Beers and the government.
South Africa discovered the largest diamond in the world, back in 1905, and it was a 3,106 Cullinan.
The second-biggest stone was found in Karowe, in northeastern of Bostwana in 2015, it was a 1,109-carat Lesedi La Rona diamond.
Africa’s biggest diamond producer is Bostwana.
According to the Minster of Minerals, Lefoko Moagi, the discovery of the diamond has come at the right time since the pandemic has hit the diamond sales from 2020.
80% of the incomes go to the government since Debswana’s sales are divided between taxes and royalties.
Since 2020, the firm’s production decreased 29% to 16.6m carats, whereas sales decreased to 30% to $2.1 billion due to the pandemic that hit the demand and production of stones.
In 2021, the output is estimated to increase by 38% by Debswana, since the worldwide diamond market is recovering, the traveling restrictions are being eased, and jewellers are being reopened.
