The Netherlands will not have Virgil van Dijk as their main defensive in the Euro 2020.
During the 2021-22 club season, the Netherlands’ team made a decision not to include van Dijk in the national team so that he could focus more on his recovery.
Back in October, during the Merseyside Derby, van Dijk had a fight with Everton’s goalkeeper Jordan Pickford, in which he fractured his ligament.
After that, van Dijk has had a stable progress with his rehabilitation, and he was even photographed at the Kirby training. However, he couldn’t join the Euro 2020 finals because that would be a quick return from injury.
The Liverpool official website has an interview of van Dijk in which he says that: ”Things have been going well, I’ve not had a real setback or anything, I’ve just progressed nicely. In this latest stage for myself, I have come to a decision that I had to make: would I be involved in the Euros, yes or no?
“With everything that is going on, I feel physically it is the right decision that I’ve decided not to go to the Euros and to go into my last phase of rehab during the off-season. So, the full focus will be on pre-season with the club and that’s a realistic goal, so I am looking forward to that.
“Obviously I am very gutted to miss the Euros, to miss the European Championship and leading out my own country there, but things have been like they have and I have to accept it – we all have to accept it. I think the decision to not go is the right decision in the grand scheme of things.
“It’s tough, but I’m at peace with it.”
While Liverpool hasn’t come out with a date as to when Van Dijk will return, they are hoping that during the summer he will fully focus on his fitness recovery. Additionally, when the new season starts in August, Van Dijk hopefully is ready to get in the game.
