Chinese swimming star Sun Yang’s high-profile retrial will start on May 26, at the Court of Arbitration. His entire career will be hanging by a thread since he is considered to be China’s swimming star for Tokyo Olympics.
With the Tokyo Olympics being 2 months away, this decision is a final one in Yang’s life as a triple Olympic champion.
Yang’s freestyle record of 1500m was banned last year by Lausanne-based CAS for not wanting to give a sample after an incident where a member of his staff smashed a bottle with Yang’s blood while doping inspectors were at his house.
Despite all this, Yang is still known as China’s star, and he also made a plea in Switzerland’s federal supreme court, however they banned this punishment only last year.
It’s been almost 8 years since Yang was banned, and ever since then, he has always tried to prove his innocence. According to him, the doping testers were not authorized.
After that, the new hearing will happen from Tuesday to Thursday, via a video link. As CAS stated, a decision will be made be public ”at a later date”.
This decision will be watched inside and outside China, particularly with the delayed Tokyo Olympics who are just around the corner.
Yang holds the title for being the 200m freestyle Olympic champion, and he is as 11-time world champion. Additionally, he acquired 2 more gold medals during the London 2012 Olympics, by setting a record for the 1500m.
The announcement that Yang has been banned for three months was made public in November 2014, for taking a banned stimulant. However, according to him, that was prescribed as a medicine for a heart condition.
