April with the lowest temperature degree for 35 years

April is the cruelest month, but this year was the lowest for 35 years, according to the Dutch meteorological institute KNMI.

The seasonal norm of 9.9 degrees has been at 6.7 degrees in the April of 2021. In 1980, the typical level in April was 8 degrees. Apart from the cold, it was an unusual and unique sunny and dry month.

The temperature simply broke the seasonal norms, there were 224 hours of sunshine and the average level was 196 hours. On the other side, the seasonal norm of rain was 41mm, and this month was 38mm.

Coldest April at De Bilt

Another bizarre fact was at De Bilt, where the degrees were below 10 all day, for ten days in a row. On the 6th of April, 5,7 degrees was the highest temperature, to put it in another way it the coldest April at De Bilt since 2013. Furthermore, since 1997, the temperature did not rise above 20 degrees during the entire month.

Temperature over 20 degrees was recorded only five times

Temperatures were rising more than 20 degrees only five times at the regional weather stations, on April 1 at Maastricht with 20,6 degrees, and four different locations on April 28.

Moreover, 18 times were recorded with the temperature below zero in Elde, Drenthe, which is close to the record of 18 frosty nights at the same zone in 1917.
