Stedelijk Museum or Stedelijk in Amsterdam was opened to the public in 1895, as a collective effort of the local authorities and other private investors. And today, it has a collection of nearly 90000 items as art or design. The museum is located at the Museum Square, nearby are the Van Gogh Museum, the Rijksmuseum, and the Concertgebouw. Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam is ranked 4th within the Netherlands and 72nd globally. In a 2015 estimate, almost 675,000 people visited the museum.

The museum was found in 1874 by a group of investors and led by C P van Eeghen. The collections from the Rijksmuseum was moved to the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam in 1895. Initially, the collections were diverse, which even had a banner of citizens’ militias. And then by 1920, the collection was more focussed on modern and contemporary arts, including design and photography exhibits.
The Vincent van Gogh collections, that were moved to the Van Gogh museum later, made Stedelijk famous among art lovers. People from all over the world used to visit them. The museum then rose to international prominence in 1945, under the leadership of William Sandberg. Today, they are one of the most celebrated museums among art lovers.
The Picasso, Dali, Paul Cézanne, and Vincent van Gogh collections are the key exhibits in Stedelijk. They even feature a 40-foot-mural created by Keith Haring in 1986.
